How often should my rug be professionally cleaned?
As a general guide, we recommend having your rugs professionally cleaned every 6 months.
Rugs are often exposed to a lot of everyday wear. Dust, dirt, pet hair and other debris that gradually build up. Most household vacuums will only be able to remove surface dust. Regular professional steam cleaning extracts deep build up in the fibres and pile.
Why clean your rug regularly?
Regular professional cleaning isn't just about making your rug look cleaner. Think about what you may have spilled, walked in or tracked into your rug over time. Dirt, dust, pet hair, oils and other contaminants become trapped within the fibres.
It's not always about what you can see. It's also about what you can't.
Over time soil and girt become trapped in the fibres which can contribute to wear and discolouration. Regular professional cleaning helps remove what vacuuming alone may not be able to reach.

Can professional rug cleaning remove stains and odours?
In many cases, yes, however we ask you to bear in mind that results may vary.
If the stain or odour can be removed will depend on when the spill occured, what caused it and if there has been DIY cleaning products applied.
It’s important not to leave the stain untreated. The longer a spill sits, the more time it has to soak into the fibres possibly causing permanent damage to the pile.
We at Kingborough Carpet Care assess each rug and if we notice that the damage is permanent, we will advise you as such. Our professional service will remove embedded dirt, dust and grime, if the rug is heavily soiled a bathing treatment may be required. The technician will advise this after assessment.
wHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I SPILL SOMETHING ON MY RUG?
Scrubbing isn’t always your friend!
It might feel like the quickest way to tackle a stain, but scrubbing can:
• Push the stain deeper
• Damage rug fibres
• Spread the stain further
We recommend blotting a stain with a clean towel. Press firmly to absorb as much as possible. Avoid over wetting the area as water can cause a stain to spread or dyes to bleed depending on the fibre content.
If the stain reappears or cannot be removed by this process, contact your local IICRC trained professional to treat using appropriate chemicals.
Not every stain can be fully removed however hot water extraction is the most effective! Removal can depend on what caused the stain and how long it has been in the rug.

How much does professional rug cleaning cost?
- Average soiling - $21.00 per sqm
- Heavy soiling/Bathing treatment - $33.00 per sqm
- Fringes (extra) - $3.50 per sqm
- Smaller than 2sqm - $40.00 per rug
- Fumgation of rug - $4.40 per sqm
- Lambs Wool (handwash) - $85.00 per rug
How to measure your rug...
To work out the approximate cost of cleaning your rug, you'll first need to calculate its square meter area.
1. Measure the length
Measure the longest side of your rug from edge to edge, in metres.
2. Measure the width
Measure the shorter side from edge to edge, in metres.
3. Calculate the square metres
Length × Width = Square Metres
You can then multiply the total square metres by our rug cleaning price per sqm to get an estimated cleaning price.
For example:
2 metres × 3 metres = 6 sqm
Average soiling is $21.00 per sqm
Total for a 6sqm rug approx. $126.00
To find the total square meters of a round rug follow the below calculation...
Length divided by 2 x 3.14 = sqm
When would my rug be classified as heavily soiled?
Rugs with heavy soiling, significant staining, excessive pet contamination, odour or other conditions requiring additional treatment may require extra time, products or specialised processes.
In these situations, the technician will assess the rug and advise you if we will need to apply our heavily soiled price before proceeding with any additional work.
